UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson warned people saying they should continue to take steps to fight Covid-19 seriously. He also urged everyone to ‘behave responsibly’ even though they gave them freedom amid another wave of the pandemic.
The lockdown in the United Kingdom has continued to be eased as for the first time in months, pub gardens, shops, saloons, and restaurants can now reopen.
Some businesses opened at midnight and a notable one is London’s Kentish Belle pub. The Showtime Bar in Huddersfield also opened up at midnight.
The ‘stay-at-home’ order in Northern Ireland is soon coming to an end and some rules are also being relaxed in Scotland and in Wales.
The drop in Covid cases prompted the Welsh Government to set some dates for reopening and on Monday, all students will resume physical classes. Non-essential shops can now also reopen and the close-contact services will as well resume. They have also restricted travel in and out of Wales.
The UK Prime minister had planned to have a celebration point to mark the measures easing; however, they have since postponed it following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh on Friday.
In a statement, the Prime Minister said the rule relaxations are ‘’a major step forward in our roadmap to freedom’’.
‘’I’m sure it will be a huge relief for those business owners who have been closed for so long. And for everyone else, it’s a chance to get back to doing some of the things we love and have missed. I urge everyone to continue to behave responsibly. And remember ‘hands, face, space, and fresh air’ to suppress Covid as we push on with our vaccination program,’’ he added.
