UPDF Celebrates Tarehe Sita In Somalia

The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) in Somalia have conducted activities to celebrate the 42nd Tarehe Sita. They are in Somalia serving under African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The activities were carried out in the Mogadishu and Ceeljaale regions of Somalia.

UPDF Contingent Commander Brig Gen Peter Gaetano Omola in Mogadishu led the troops to clean Marina Market.

“UPDF values the local population as key to its success. That’s why we are carrying out these activities to give back to you the community as a way of appreciating the support you have always rendered to us. Without you we can’t do much,” he said.

He additionally thanked them for their important role in partnering with the ATMIS forces to defeat Alshabaab. He then asked them to maintain the spirit.

Mr. Abdallah Mohamed Ali, the Marina market chairman expressed his gratitude to the UPDF.

“I have grown into an old man but I have never seen or heard of an army that respects the local population like UPDF. I am a living testimony to this and I have the trust and confidence that Alshabaab propagandists will be defeated completely. We shall continue to support you for this justified cause.”

In Ceeljaale, the troops cleaned Ceeljaale market, Fiqi primary and secondary school, and Almunye primary school.

Mr. Mohamed Osman Musa, the district Commissioner Marka congratulated UPDF up on its 42nd Tarehe Sita and pledged full support. Also at the scene in Ceeljaale was SNA commander for Ceeljaale battalion Maj Abdukadir Munye among others.

Read what some leaders said; Ms Naigambi Lydia from Nawandala Trading Centre says, “They solicited money from us through opening bank accounts and depositing Shs80,000. They also asked for land titles and land agreements from us yet we don’t have such things. I was informed that I needed to have a business with a capital of Shs4m yet my capital was very small.” The chairperson Kisoboka Saving Group in Nawandala Ms. Nakagolo Faith said they were not able to join the program. This is given the many conditions attached. She also asked their woman MP to raise their concerns to the relevant offices. The MP condemned the mode of implementation of the program. She cited that it has turned to benefit the well-off class of women other than the intended group. She further asked the government to intervene saying the current strings attached to the programme are very tight to accommodate a common woman. GROW project is a Government of Uganda initiative that arose out of the need to respond to the needs of women entrepreneurs. This is especially those who want to grow their businesses, sustain their self-employment and create more jobs.
