Through an advisory, FAA asked planes to exercise caution while flying. They said this is because the rebel group Al Shabaab still remains a threat to aviation.
The latest advisory is informed by the assessments that the Somalia-based terrorist group, Al-Shabaab is still an active threat in the region.
“Such weapons could target aircraft at low altitudes, including during the arrival and departure phases of flight, and/or target airports and aircraft on the ground. Especially at airfields located east of 40 degrees east longitude,” their advisory stated.
Some of the routes listed in the Kenyan airspace by FAA include those connecting Nairobi and eastern counties like India, and China, among other destinations serviced by major airlines.
Some others include the planes plying the routes overpassing Eastern Kenya with Garissa county being on the list as it borders Somalia.
The advisory comes a few days after the French government issued a terror alert to Kenya. It warned the country’s citizens of a possible attack in Kenya.
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the alert, cautioned its citizens and expatriates from other countries to stay away from crowded public places.
The embassy red zoned commercial centers, hotels, leisure centers, and restaurants among other most visited areas in Nairobi.
Within the same period, Germany similarly sent an alert to its citizens in the country.
The two governments outlined measures its citizens should take in case of an attack. They included where to get immediate help including calling the embassy’s emergency lines and those of Kenyan authorities.
However, Kenya downplayed the alerts but assured everyone that law enforcement authorities were on high alert to counter any threats.
