Victoria Hospital Reduces Charges And Reserves Free Beds For Health Workers

UMC Victoria Hospital in Bukoto has reduced the charges for treating Covid-19 patients during the surge in positive cases. This is a move that will enable different classes of people to access treatment unlike how it has previously been.

It has also reserved free beds for the health workers so that they can avoid congestion, get better quicker and get back to their life-saving duties.

The medical director of Victoria hospital, Dr. Edrine Juuko said the patients who will be admitted at the hospital’s annex wing. The charges will range between Shs 400,000-600,000 a day.

Many members of the public have complained about the exorbitant fees charged by private hospitals to access Covid treatment.

Therefore, the move by UMCVH to reduce these costs will be welcomed by many who seek quality medical attention.

‘’As a hospital, we have opened a low-cost unit annex wing which at the site formerly occupied by Kadic hospital. The wing will handle exclusively Covid-19 cases,’’ Juuko said.

Juuko also said they will not charge health workers the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) recommends for bed and food in the reserved beds.

A previous study showed that if one spent 20 days at one of the major private health facilities in Kampala, it would cost a fortune.

This made major party players cry out to the government to step in and have these facilities study their rates.

Col. Edith Nakalema, the head of the State House anti-Corruption Unit warned that this behaviour will force government to intervene to put these hospitals to order.
