Apparently out of 19 sub-counties, only five received good from the government. This only means the hunger that was earlier reported in Karamoja is still very active but the attention has been diverted. Speaking to the media though, the leaders said they should be remembered.
Paul Komol, the Kotido District Chairman, says they are still waiting for the relief that was allocated by the government to reach the area. He insists that the response is very low.
At the peak of the news earlier, some individuals and organizations responded to this call and sent relief food to Karamoja. However, government officials were in news saying preparations are being made to make sure food reaches this area.
At some point, the public started pinpointing people like Agnes Nandutu, Minister in charge of the region. She was castigated for apparently abandoning her role to the people.
In her response though, she said the government can’t always come to the news to show the people what it’s doing but Karamoja was being worked on.
Two months down the road though, leaders in Karamoja say they haven’t received help in some parts.
Beyond sending food to these areas, government probably needs to find a lasting solution to this food shortage.
Government sends more food to hunger hit Karamoja
Meanwhile the government sent 790 metric tons of relief food to Karamoja sub-region where people are on the brink of starvation.
Mr. Hillary Onek, the Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees flagged off 552 of the total relief food sent. The 238 metric tonnes of beans at the Office of Prime Minister Stores in Namanve, Wakiso District yesterday.
