“We believe we are the people’s army, and we want to continue with that character.”
Kulayigye commented on the recent incidents where army personnel has been mistreating police officers. He says these have been presented in their courts already over discipline issues.
“Whereas we have the right of way, we have no right to manhandle police officers. Error is human, but the bar is high when it’s a disciplined society like ours. We have paraded people in courts of law and tried them for misbehaving. This is the only army that subjects its soldiers to the law and publicly.”
Meanwhile, NUP supporter, Hon. Muwada Nkunyigi said the military ought to respect other security agencies regardless.
“The military must know that to respect other security agencies and civilians isn’t doing them a favor. Nobody is above the law. The army must be a profession of discipline, and part of the discipline is having a line of command. The way the military wants to get respect because of the law, they must understand that there are other security agencies like the police in uniform and have to be respected.”
He, however, blamed the police to have blown their chances when they refused to support NUP into power. According to him, Bobi Wine would have already changed the discontent they are in currently.
“I blame the police officers. One of the challenges is they didn’t guard their vote well. We (NUP) would be in power now and fulfilling our manifesto that involved improving their welfare.”
