Human Rights Activist, Moses Mulumba, has said its about time for the country to have a law to regulate organ transplants in Uganda. This comes after the incident that has gone viral on social media.
A man came out and accused Old Kampala hospital of getting one of his Kidneys out without his consent. Mulumba also says the Parliament should think of making a law to regulate this.
“There is no better time than now to have a law that regulates organ transplants, and the scope of the law and proposals that are there are very important.”
Dr. Frank Assiimwe, a Urologist said it’s an expert doctor that carried out this extraction because it needs expertise.
“You need skill. Not anyone can remove a kidney. Remember, you are not removing an apple from a tree. If you are to remove an organ, it must come from a healthy donor. That donor must have been screened for diseases.”
Dr. Assiimwe also says they are drafting a law to handle such cases. Every party involved at any level will face arrest.
“If at any one point someone got a transplant and it’s found out that they bought or it was obtained illegally, that person will be arrested. The donor will be arrested, the hospital will be closed, and you must explain, and the sentence is in this law that is being formed.”
