There has been a debate between musicians and the government about artists’ constant requests for a copyright law to be passed.
They were asked to form associations and federations so that they could use one voice which they did. It’s over a year now ever since Eddy Kenzo stepped up and made the UNMF (Uganda National Musicians Federation).
Many artists joined him expecting him to work on the copyright law like he promised. He even met the president Museveni in an effort to do that.
Instead of working on the copyright law, Eddy Kenzo received money from the government on behalf of musicians. He said the money is meant to help artists start-up businesses.
Some musicians complained that they didn’t get the money and others rejected it saying that it is not what they had asked for.
According to Nina Roz, Eddy Kenzo, and his federation need to stop confusing musicians and do what is right.
“We want copyright not money and handouts from government. We know what our worth is and all I can say is that artists need copyright more than money,” she said.
