Makerere University students have taken a petition to the Leader of Opposition in parliament, Mathias Mpuuga requesting him to intervene in the suspension of guild elections.
In the petition, the students say the decisions of the university council is against the provisions of the Universities and 0ther Institutions Act.
“The chairperson of the council, Lorna Magara, acted outside the provisions of the law governing the creation and governance of the student’s guild by constituting members of the University Council to review the students’ guild constitution without students’ representatives,” the spokesman of the Makerere University students select committee, Joshua Lawel Muhwezi says.
In their petition, the Makerere University Students want Parliament to prevail over the University Council. To reinstate the guild and all students’ leadership structures.
Mpuuga while giving his opinion on this, said Makerere is about to become a big primary school.
“All of us must reject those overtures because Makerere is a hill of intellectual exchange. Students should not be treated like kids; these are adults.”
“We all regretted the incident in which a young man lost his life. Nobody should lose life because they are seeking leadership. Of course, this comes from a background of people who are used to blood. In the last national elections, we lost over 100 people [but] the country did not stop,” Mpuuga added.
These elections were suspended after a student lost his life during campaigns. Betungura Bewatte, a UCU student was stabbed by an unidentified person till date.
