State minister for Primary Healthcare, Ms Margaret Muhanga revealed this on Wednesday. She did this as she received a mobile laboratory donated by the European Union.
“Covid-19 threat is still there, but there is no (new) death because many of our people are vaccinated. Others have built hard immunity (from previous Covid-19 infection),” Ms Muhanga said.
Furthermore, she said most of the cases originate from Kampala and Wakiso districts. Apparently, the metropolitan area has been affected in a disproportionate manner since the outbreak.
According to scientists, high numbers are reported in the area due to overcrowding and having frequent travelers.
Dr Allan Muruta, the commissioner for public health emergencies told reporters that the positivity rate for Covid-19 is less than 1%. This number is a big sign that the disease is well under control.
He further revealed that with the addition of this new mobile lab, it brings the total number of such labs to three. This progress will increase turnaround time for lab tests and improve disease outbreak response.
“Previously, we could take samples to Uganda Virus Research Institute and results would take 2 days to come out. However, with mobile labs, you get results in hours,” he said.
Reports revealed that the mobile lab is worth EUR167300 (Shs700 million).
