It should be noted that Syria’s government led by President Bashar al-Asad collapsed in the past couple of days. He has been replaced by a coalition of rebel forces that have captured the capital city, Damascus.
This means that Asaad’s 24-year rule has come to an end after having replaced his father in 2000. An uprising started in 2011 with large protests against Asaad’s government.
This involved actors both foreign-funded and state-sponsored. However, he has been able to hold onto his rule for 13 years thankfully to Russian assistance.
With his fall, Gashumba thinks that this will be the story of almost every country that has the Syria model in place. He also added that some volatile countries especially in the Middle East and Africa require a dictator to control them.
“Unless there’s positive change and reform in governance style, what has happened in Syria, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, will happen in other countries. Especially those with similar conditions and political tensions. It might take long, but it’s not a question of if it will happen, but when it will happen.”
“People forget that sometimes it takes a dictator to control a country, especially in the Middle East and Africa. Just look at Libya, Sudan, Iraq, and now Syria. They removed dictators and now it’s a total mess.”
It should be noted that he’s an ardent supporter of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba who looks set to take over leadership from his father, Gen Yoweri Museveni.
