Absenteeism in Parliament has been a discussion that has been so loud this week. The August house is barely half full in the sittings which also alarmed the speaker. However, some MPs have been claiming to be in their constituencies.
The Speaker however has paid no attention to the explanation of the absent MPs, she says registration is going to get serious and the absentees will be answerable. Sserwanja says this is not just bad but it’s disrespectful from the MPs.
“It’s disrespect and indiscipline that ministers are not in Parliament to do business. It’s also embarrassing that MPs also stand to ask questions, and ministers are not in Parliament to answer these questions.”
Solomon Sserwanja says the public votes MPs to speak for them. So, by all means they must do their job. Otherwise, this should attract some kind of punishment.
“When we vote MPs, they must do their job, and when they don’t, there must be a punishment for that. We know the different tricks MPs play. They come in, sign, and leave the House or committees.”
Speaking about this same matter earlier this week, Hon. Solomon Silwany said the absenteeism is only going to get worse as we approach the election period. He says MPs are under pressure to impress their people and also appear for sittings.
