The Galapagos tortoise known speed has been living in San Diego since 1933 with thirteen others that have remained living within the area and has been one of the oldest residents in the zoo.

Speed was bought in California as an early effort to preserve the endangered species from the Volcan Cerro Azul Island of the Galapagos islands off Ecuador.
This tortoise Speed was known in his early days as an early alpha male who would butt heads with other males in dominance skirmishes.
It has been in a poor health condition and massive tortoise had been in geriatric decline for some time. Keepers treated his arthritis and other maladies with medication, hydrotherapy, physical therapy and acupuncture.
