4 Things You Need To Think When Changing Light Bulbs

Got a light bulb that doesn’t work anymore? It can mean two things: the light bulb reached the end of its lifespan, or the quality is otherwise. When the light bulb has stopped working, normally, you would replace it. But unfortunately, most people don’t know there are proper steps to change the bulb. It sounds obvious, but it is the ideal way to maintain them.

Changing a light bulb will not take too much of your time. Instead, think of the possibilities when you are going to get a new one. It also applies when you are removing the used bulb. You do not need an electrician’s help since you can do it independently. However, knowing these procedures can give you an idea of what to do.

1. Turn off the light switch as you change

It is unsafe to replace the used light bulb when the switch is on. The electricity is still flowing despite the bulb not working anymore. There is also the possibility that you can get an electric shock as you change the bulb. While you can wear a rubber glove to repel the electric shock, it is better to have it turned off.

When it is off, you can safely get the used bulb. No need to worry about getting shocked!

2. Let the old light bulb cool down

Once you get the bulb, most of the time, it may be hot. It is due to having remnants of electricity to illuminate the light. When it is recently out of light, the heat is still present.

If you have incandescent bulbs, there’s more heat present than LEDs. While the latter has less heat, you still have to cool it down. That is why even on switched-off fixtures, you can feel that the room is hot because of the lights—letting the bulb cool down will make it better for proper disposal.

3. Dispose of the used light bulb properly

Since the light bulb is an electronic device, have it disposed of properly. Group it in specific garbage bags specifically for electronics. You can also place them with old electronics you do not use anymore. Having it mixed up with other trash will be harmful to the environment. In addition, the materials used in making a light bulb will decompose slower since it is made from metals and plastic. Being conscious of the environment is one step toward sustainability.

4. Replace with the right wattage

When you get the new bulb, have the same wattage so your electric bill will not rise. For example, light bulbs from FELCO have many wattages to choose from. Each house has a specific electric consumption. Too much can create a short circuit at home, which is dangerous.

Sometimes, you have to estimate the number of bulbs needed at home with their wattages. If one is uneven, the electric consumption will increase, and you will not get as much coverage. Make sure that when buying at the hardware store, you get the number of lights needed. You may get extra in case to lessen the need to go out.

Wrap Up

For as simple as changing light bulbs, you are considering many options. You can get a new bulb right away, or you can get one later. Either way, managing lights at home shows you can regulate electricity.
