The survivors called the Police telephone numbers and we directed them to come to Mukono police Station to pick up their items which included handbags, National IDs, ATM cards and many others,’’said Mr Luke Owoyesigyire ( the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson ).
After the incident, witnesses said there were over 100 people on the boat, but surprisingly, only 33 bodies were recovered and 26 survived which brought doubt of miscalculation on exact number of either the dead or survivors.
Police was later informed that more survivors, upon successfully reaching the shores, immediately escaped by boda bodas and taxis to avoid being identified because many of them never informed their partners about their journey.
The fifty new survivors explained the differences and this makes 87 as the total number of people who escaped death on the boat cruise which capsized on Lake Victoria.
The new survivors that showed up have given Police more hope that indeed dozens of people escaped the accident, but they were just in shock.
