“5G technology means fast internet, fast connectivity and efficiency in the way we do our things. This adds a lot of value to our vision of ensuring that there is digital inclusion in our country,” Baryomunsi said.
He made these remarks on Monday during Airtel’s official 5G network launch at Kampala Serena Hotel.
Back in July, Airtel Uganda became the first telecom company to introduce 5G network in the country. This is one of the ways through which faster internet speeds are to be delivered.
5G, also known as fifth generation technology is said to deliver speeds of 10 times faster than the current 4G network.
5G network is reported to support one million connected devices per square kilometer. This is unlike the 4G network which can only handle 100,000 connected devices in the similar area.
Last evening, Dr. Baryomunsi said the new technology speaks well to the incoming fourth Industrial Revolution. In this revolution, technology is driving the world’s transformation agenda.
“Therefore, you can’t run away from the journey of transformation facilitated by technology. When you look at the global dynamics, there is a huge digital divide between the conceptual north and South. Here in Africa, we need not only to move fast by to run in order to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of the digital agenda,” he said.
He further said there are different technologies to foster the adoption of this agenda. He said the country is now ready to stop reading about them in books and instead start implementing them.
The minister thanked the private sector for their hand in pushing the digital transformation agenda and pledged government’s support in all ways possible.
