Absenteeism In Parliament Is Going To Get Worse As We Approach Elections – Hon. Solomon Silwany

Bukooli County Central MP, Hon. Solomon Silwany, has said the absenteeism in Parliament is only going to get worse. Parliament has been on the spot over legislators who skip sessions without any form of apology even.

Silwany says it’s the people they represent who push them not to attend the meetings because they always expect them to appear for their personal functions.

“The attendance of committees and plenary is going down, and this is going to worsen as we get closer to the next election. Do you know you can lose an election because someone says you didn’t bury their relative? The government needs to improve service delivery. I have had to build a health centre in my constituency.”

Silwany says the good MPs in the 10th Parliament were not voted back because they were attending plenary sessions.

According to him, this could be scaring a number of MPs which has made them slaves to people instead of doing their work. However, he says it’s probably the chief whips to make sure MPs attend these meetings.

“When you look at the good legislators in the 10th Parliament, many of these didn’t come back to the 11th Parliament. Legislators are grappling between coming to Parliament or going to the constituencies. It’s now the whips (government and opposition) to ensure legislators come to Parliament.”

Scattered MPs

NEWSLEXPOINT.com recently reported that Anita Among, the Speaker of Parliament tasked the attorney general to quickly and swiftly work on the acquisition of offices for MPs under one roof.

This was due to the fact that legislators were ‘scattered’ in different buildings and parliament was spending colossal sums of money on rent.
