“When you force these young boys out of town, we are going to face a bigger problem in the country resulting from unemployment. We don’t want these young boys to lose their jobs. We need to come back to the drawing board. You can’t discuss the number of boda bodas that will remain in the CBD without gazetting stages. The stages where the boda boda riders are currently operating are illegal.”
Abubakar Kawalya said as leaders they should involve the groups of boda bodas because only then will they find sustainable solutions.
Unfortunately, this is not the case because they are making decisions in boardrooms without involving those on ground.
Meanwhile, Kawalya says as Kampala leaders, they need to be involved in the process of making such decisions.
“There’s no one against the issue of regularising the boda boda business, but what channels are being used. The problem is that the leaders of Kampala are not being involved in the process. Does the government know that these riders have places they come from? Do they know that Kampala has five divisions? This is why I am saying that consultations are very important.”
Apparently out of 200,000 riders, they only need 7000 on the road. The question is where will the 193000 riders go to.
If there is no solution for this as of yet, the country may experience an increase in crime rate as people try to look for survival.
