Actress Lupita Nyong’o On Why She Ditched Her Kenyan Accent In America

Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyongo has revealed why she ditched her Kenyan accent while in the United States (USA). The actress said that as an African woman, it is hard to find opportunities especially in Hollywood when it comes to acting.

There are so many talented people from all over the world. To get an opportunity, one has to be at their best in everything.

Lupita revealed that when she moved to America, she had to learn so fast the accent of America. She realized that speaking her Kenyan accent will not help her with her dreams and career.

She said that doesn’t mean that she is not proud to be African because she is. She had to adjust because of the opportunities in Hollywood.

“When I moved to America, I was still young and I had dreams like any other person. I know it is not easy but I had to learn an American accent because I know in Hollywood, Africans don’t have a bigger opportunity. I am s proud Kenyan and ditching the Kenyan accent doesn’t mean anything,”

Lupita Nyongo also said that she had to learn other languages like Spanish which is helpful in acting.

It should be noted that Lupita Nyong’o lived in Mexico for most of her early life. She went to schools in Mexico and speaks fluent Spanish.

It was not until later as a young adult that she went to the US and eventually settled in Hollywood. Her Kenyan roots are therefore only visible in her skin and perhaps the little Swahili she speaks.
