Frank Kyazze, Kasangati RDC, condemned what he labeled as “sheer negligence” by authorities, attributing the Kiteezi landfill tragedy to preventable oversight and emphasizing the need for accountability to avert future disasters.
Expressing frustration over the lack of swift action post-tragedy, Kyazze highlighted the ongoing risks posed by the unresolved garbage accumulation at the site, underscoring the urgency for corrective measures to prevent a recurrence of the catastrophic event.
In a show of solidarity, Kiteezi Samaritan, in collaboration with International Samaritan, extended relief aid to over 700 affected individuals, offering essential food supplies to alleviate the immediate hardships faced by the victims of the landfill collapse.
While refraining from pinpointing a specific entity, the Kasangati RDC stressed the imperative of holding those responsible for the tragedy to account, urging a thorough investigation akin to the anti-corruption initiatives spearheaded by the government.
Long-term support initiatives
David Kafambe, Country Director at International Samaritan in Uganda, outlined plans for sustained assistance, outlining a comprehensive relief program aimed at addressing the immediate needs of the impacted individuals while fostering strategies for their long-term recovery and empowerment.
Emphasizing a holistic approach, Kafambe underscored International Samaritan’s commitment to fostering education, faith-based initiatives, and livelihood support to uplift the affected families, with a focus on breaking the cycle of poverty and nurturing sustainable community development.
