Agnes Nandutu Reflects On Her Tough Journey To Fame

Bududa woman MP Agnes Nandutu has come out to narrate her tough journey to the woman she has become right now. Nandutu became famous during her stint on NTV where she was doing the Point blank segment and People’s Parliament. However, before all the fame and good life, there were many hurdles she had to jump.

She gave her experience growing up in a tough environment and doing odd jobs to survive. Agnes Nandutu says that she grew up in an extremely poor family and her parents separated when she was still a toddler.

She therefore grew up with her paternal grandfather. Just like most countryside kids, Nandutu and her siblings had to wake up early and dig before going to school.

She was however a very bright learner despite these dire conditions. She would go ahead to score aggregate 5 in her PLE. However, due to financial constraints, Nandutu dropped out of school before her senior four. She went to Kenya to work as a housemaid where her mother was working too.

Nandutu went ahead to say that her mother sent her back to school but she was demotivated to rejoin school. She, therefore, decided to head to Mbale and work in a restaurant and bar.

She was liked by her boss due to her hard work but later went to Kampala with her cousin.

They settled in Wabigalo, a Kampala slum together with her cousin. She had hoped to get a good job in Kampala bars and restaurants. She however developed interest in journalism after visiting Radio Uganda where her cousin had a friend.

Nandutu then started doing a health show on radio where she earned shs 16,000. She would later pursue a career in journalism at the advice of a friend.

“I did voice training and started doing a health show on radio. I was a freelancer then and my first salary was Ugx 16,000. My friend encouraged me to study journalism, so, I went to Uganda Institute Of Business and Media Studies and got a certificate.” Agnes Nandutu narrated while appearing on NTV’s Mwasuzze Mutya show.

She then joined Monitor, impact radio and radio Uganda. From this she decided to upgrade her education to a diploma.

By then she had four children and had to juggle motherhood and four jobs with different media houses.

Later she got a recommendation and joined NTV. Due to the nature of her program, people started pushing her to join politics.

She went back to complete her UACE in 2015 but failed. She however didn’t give up and completed in 2017.

It was then that she ran for the NRM primaries for the Bududa woman mp in 2019 but lost to the incumbent. She however returned in the general elections last year and massively won.

Nandutu was named in the cabinet by President Museveni as State Minister in charge of Karamoja.
