A whole year has gone by since the singer laid the first stone of the $6 billion city he vowed to build in Senegal, but the area is still a grazing field.
The stone itself sits at the bottom of a dirt track in a field and small placard advertising the project has since fallen off it.
The construction of ‘’Akon City’’, a project to feature ultramodern twisting skyscrapers is meant to have begun near the Atlantic Ocean village of Mbodiene. But building work is yet to start, prompting residents who hoped for jobs to wonder about the city’s future.
‘’They laid the foundation stone for the futuristic city with a lot of speeches and promises. Compared to everything that was announced, I don’t think we have seen much yet.’’ A 35-year-old local working for the tourism industry in the country said.
The lot laid the ceremonial stone on August 31 2020 and set the construction to begin early this year. A hospital, school, shopping mall, homes, police station, waste centre among other facilities.
Many expected these things to be in the city by 2023. However according to the plans the construction of the whole city is expected to be finished by 2030.
Many have wondered whether the project was canceled or just delayed for various reasons.
