Baker Batte, a senior journalist has advised the president to let the citizens rant on social media. He said this because of the boiling computer misuse bill that has some restrictions on social media.
However, Batte thinks this bill should not continue into becoming law.
“This law (Computer Misuse Bill) was brought to curtail. They have lost the digital law. This law is coming to insulate the people with power. It’s not for us. It’s for them. I think President Museveni and the man who wants to replace him (the monarch they want to create) should know that it’s in their interest for them to allow the citizens to rant on social media. He should allow people to vent anger,” he added.
Arinaitwe Rugyendo, another journalist also said social media has leveled the debate between citizens and leaders. The public can freely vent about the work done by leaders but the bill that is being tabled may not allow this to go on.
“People go to social media to vent about the people in the state because they have failed to do their work. If you don’t want me to abuse you, provide medicine, construct the roads. This law is going to be taken down. Social media has leveled the debate between citizens and rulers. Digital and technology keep changing every day. You can’t regulate it.”
Hon. Muhamad Nsereko brought this bill to Parliament but a number of people have warned that no one can win against the public.
