The ambulance, registration number UG 6836M overturned at Cwagere swamp in Cwagere Village, on the Amolatar Dokolo road. The accident occurred on Friday evening at around 5 pm.
A source at the scene of the accident said the driver in protective gear called for help. Apparently seatbelts had trapped three occupants in the ambulance.
Four people volunteered to help and released the driver, who sustained no injuries whatsoever. They then pulled out the patient and the attendant, who also sustained no injuries.
‘’One person who looked very sick was gasping and could not talk,’’ the source said.
Another source said the volunteers did not have protection and some of them were not even wearing face masks.
The Director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital said he had been attending a zoom meeting at the time, but knew about the accident.
He sent a text message during the meeting in which he stated, ‘’Yes, I have been informed.’’
From the ambulance driver’s side of the story, he said the ambulance overturned after he tried to dodge a pedestrian crossing.
During this time, he lost control of the ambulance which led to its overturning.
