NRM’s Andrew Ojok Oulanyah Massively Wins Omoro County By-election

The NRM flagbearer for Omoro County Andrew Ojok Oulanyah has been declared the winner of the by-election. According to the official results from the Electoral Commission, Andrew Ojok polled 14,224 votes.

His closest competitor Simon Toolit Oketcha followed in second with votes amounting to 1,633.

This made sure that the 32-year-old retained his father’s seat and it won’t be vacating the family soon.

While speaking about his victory, Oulanyah said that he’s so happy to have been chosen by the masses. He also thanked the other candidates and the NRM’s leadership for believing in him.

“This is a very important victory especially given the number of voters, it is a big statement. I want to thank all the candidates who stood, they have given an alternative. I want to thank the party and local leadership. This election should unite us. We need to come back together as leaders of Omoro,” he said.

The Electoral Commission chairman Simon Byabakama described this election as “the most peaceful we have seen so far.”

Despite the election attracting two of the biggest political figures in the country, President Museveni and NUP’s leader Bobi Wine, voter turn up was very low. It was estimated to be around 67%.

Further, the voters were around 40,000 but only a few turned up. A number of NUP top hierarchy and supporters however have not been content with the results.

Some feel that the NRM has actually stolen a victory that would have been theirs. They cited a number of injustices meted onto them by the government.

This includes attempts to ballot stuff, arresting NUP’s polling agents. They also allege voter bribery plus cars without number plates traversing the area in the wee hours of the morning.

NUP spokesperson Hon Joel Ssenyonyi said that what happened in Omoro is not new but should worry every Ugandan.

“What has happened today in Omoro County is not new but should worry every well meaning Ugandan out there.”

Below is how the different six candidates polled in the election held to fill the vacancy created after the demise of the late speaker Hon Jacob.

Odong Justine Obiya (FDC) – 529
