Another Influx Of Congolese Refugees Arrives In Uganda

An influx of Congolese refugees into Uganda was recorded after a fight between suspected M23 rebels and the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) broke out on Monday morning.

This fight forced hundreds of displaced persons to flee from DRC into Uganda.

Sources confirmed the new refugee entrants were seeking safety, shelter, and food and many of them are entering through the Bunagana border.

Heavy gunfire rocked Sabinyo ranges, especially in some areas including Runyonyi, Kyanzo, Bugusa among others. These are located only 4 kilometers from the Bunagana border in the North Kivu province.

A couple of security agencies received the new arrivals and the UN High Commission for Refugees thereafter transferred them to a refugee camp in Nyakabande.

Many often abbreviate the March 23 Movement as M23, this group also considers itself the Congolese Revolutionary Army. It is a military rebel group based in eastern areas of the DRC. Furthermore, it mainly operates in the province of North Kivu.

There are currently over 6,500 child refugees in Uganda as violence surges in DRC. Over 11,000 refugees, including 6,500 children, have entered Uganda since November 2021.

These were fleeing escalating violence in North Kivu’s Rutshuru Territory in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with an urgent need for essential supplies

Uganda is a host to about one million five hundred thousand refugees from countries across the great lakes region.
