The Argentina Football Association has written a petition to FIFA protesting the way their opening game against Morocco was handled. It should be noted that this game of the 2024 Paris Olympics turned chaotic in St-Etienne.
Argentina thought they had found the equalizer in the 16th minute of stoppage time.
First and foremost, this game was suspended for almost an hour after there was a pitch invasion. Cristian Medina thought he had grabbed an equalizer for the South American side.
However, this game sparked widespread protests, especially from the Moroccan fans. This saw the game completed behind closed doors. And when it was resumed, VAR ruled out the goal for offside.
How it all unfolded.
A huge section of fans in the stadium booed the Argentina players and the national anthem. Smoke bombs were also thrown at them.
This was apparently a message in regards to Argentina’s senior team’s racist chant that was aimed at the Black French footballers.
Reacting after the game, Argentina’s coach Javier Mascherano said “I can’t explain what happened. We spent about an hour and a half in the dressing room where they never told us what was going to happen.”
The captain of the Argentina men’s national football team Lionel Messi also took to Instagram and called the game unbelievable.
Well, Chique Tapia who is the president of the Argentina Football Association said that what their players were subjected to is unbelievable. He believes that this game should have been suspended by the referee following the pitch invasion.
He went ahead to say “From the Argentine Football Association, we have already submitted the complaint to FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee. This is so that the relevant regulatory measures can be taken and a sanction imposed on those responsible.”
