Martin Odegaard’s injury while playing for Norway has delivered Arsenal a potentially disastrous blow just six days before their derby against Tottenham. This has left the Gunners and club coach Mikel Arteta with a huge blow.
The playmaker was substituted out of Monday night’s 2-1 Nations League victory against Austria. This was due to an ankle injury sustained following a slide tackle by Christoph Baumgartner.
He staggered off, writhing in discomfort whilst fighting back tears, looking as though he was in excruciating pain as he rolled on the floor. He needed help off the pitch by team doctors.
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland who scored the game-winning goal at the eighty-minute mark, was one of the teammates who consoled Odegaard by giving him a slap on the back as he hobbled off.
“Martin Odegaard’s injury looked bad in the dressing room,” Norway head coach Stale Solbakken revealed.
“He got a small ankle sprain. We will see, maybe we will use ultrasound to look at it.”
“If we are unsure, there will be an MRI tomorrow,” National team doctor Ola Sand also said.
Depending on how bad the injury is, Mikel Arteta might have a lot of headaches in the midfield. Declan Rice, who received a dubious red card against Brighton, is suspended for the North London derby over the weekend. And Mikel Merino, a £33 million summer acquisition, is also out injured.
Merino broke his shoulder during his first practice, therefore Arteta might start in midfield against Spurs alongside Jorginho and Thomas Partey.
They are also lamenting the bizarre injury to £42 million player Riccardo Calafiori suffered against France while playing for Italy.
The Gunners look to be short on their midfield with tricky games that could define their season coming up. They have a trip to face Man City at the Etihad after Spurs. And the UCL too will be around the corner.
