Swangz Avenue singer, Priscilla Zawedde alias Azawi has raised concerns over the money that was received by the Eddy Kenzo-led Uganda National Musicians Federation.
It should be recalled that the Federation SACCO received billions of shillings from the government. This money is available for all registered members to borrow and use for their personal ventures.
However, they have to refund it according to the terms and conditions agreed. Their music catalog will be acting as the collateral security.
The Masavu singer said that it’s shocking that despite this money being released, it’s the so-called big artistes who received the biggest shares. And they are not even obliged to pay back. It’s only those struggling artists who are borrowing.
Azawi wondered if these artists knew the repercussions of borrowing government money. Additionally, she wondered what they would do if the government took over their music catalog in the event that they failed to repay the money.
Read her statement below;
“The Federation SACCO money was given out. But it’s shocking that the already “established” artists are the ones that got the fattest amounts and are not obliged to pay back. (as in bbo babawa buwi kavangata). However, those who are struggling are the ones who are borrowing. My question is, do these struggling artists know the repercussions of failure to pay back government money? What if the government takes their entire music catalog, are they ready for that?,” she questioned.
Some of the singers’ however have turned down the opportunity to borrow this money, like Spice Diana. When they asked if she has already received this money, Spice Diana said that she didn’t need it. She believes that there are those who need it more.
