Joe Biden ‘s campaign is facing mounting pressure amid reported concerns from former President Barack Obama about the presidential election.
The mood among Democrats appears to be darkening, with some senior party officials reportedly suggesting that Biden’s stepping down as the nominee is “inevitable”.
A recent poll by CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, shows Biden trailing Trump by five points, the widest margin recorded during the campaign. This has added to the growing concerns within the Democratic party about Biden’s chances of winning.
Biden’s campaign rejects reports of high-level concern
Biden’s campaign has dismissed reports of high-level Democratic concern as “baseless”, insisting that he will remain the nominee.
However, there are signs that the Democratic leadership has begun to apply more pressure on Biden to consider his candidacy for the good of the party.
The Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, and the ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, are reported to have told Biden that their colleagues in Congress are “concerned” that his troubles will hit their own chances of re-election.
Nancy Pelosi, the former House Speaker, is also reported to have told Biden that polls show he cannot win.
Biden’s response and health update
Biden has so far struck a defiant tone in response to the Democratic pressure, continuing to enjoy the public support of many politicians, including members of the powerful Congressional Black Caucus.
However, the Biden campaign has acknowledged that the president has mild upper respiratory symptoms associated with COVID-19 but does not have a fever.
In contrast, Donald Trump will give the headline speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday evening, his first speech since surviving an assassination attempt. Delegates and supporters at the convention have been in high spirits all week.
