For the past five years, the deceased had been in and out of the hospital.
In 2020, Bishop Emeritus Bakyenga celebrated 50 years of priesthood as he bid farewell to Christian’s in the Mbarara Archdiocese.
The announcement of his passing came from a close friend of the deceased. The Catholic Church is expected to release a statement later today on Bakyenga’s death.
Bakyenga got ordained as a priest in Bushenyi district in 1977 and a day later, he was appointed Chaplain of Ntare School in Mbarara. He later moved to Nyamitanga Parish as the Curate.
He also had a stint as a Rector at Katabi Seminary and as a Pastoral Coordinator at Nyamitanga Cathedral.
In 2018, Bakyenga requested Pope Francis to retire him, saying he had medical conditions. In 2020, Pope Francis accepted Bakyenga’s resignation and appointed Auxiliary Bishop Lambert Bainomugisha as the successor.

The MP’s vehicle a Land Cruiser, registration number UBK 995F colluded with a truck with Kenyan registration number, KCX 0710K. The legislator had his wife with him in the car at the time of the accident.
