Bloggers have spit fire in response to the new Uganda Communication Commission move to regulate online content. Earlier this week, UCC came out to say that all bloggers, news media must go and register with them so that they officiate their works.
Anything to do with online content including, online radios, online Television, among others must have a registration number.
This however has not gone well with most of the bloggers who are saying that UCC is trying to be oppressive. Some of them think UCC is only trying to be political about this matter given the time we are in. They are blaming UCC for being used to censor online content which directly tampers with the freedom of speech.
There are so many questions to be asked however. Who is considered as a Ugandan broadcaster? We have so many bloggers who are not within the country but their content is very Ugandan. People like Rita Kaggwa, Don. Zella among others. How are they going to be handled because they are not within the defined jurisdiction.
The time UCC has come out is also very suspicious indeed. What have they been waiting for? The move is definitely justified, they want to regulate online content but the timing is a very huge turn off because of the heated political atmosphere.
However, UCC is not moved at all by all this as they still maintain that by 5th October 2020, every online content maker must have registered with them.
