Wine accused Museveni of favoritism and questioned the impartiality of the newly appointed members.
He claims that these appointments pose a significant threat to the possibility of a free and fair election in the country
In his statement, Kyagulanyi expressed concerns about the appointment of individuals closely aligned with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, suggesting that Museveni’s motive is to maintain his grip on power.
“He no longer wants to pretend. He has decided to appoint renowned NRM cadres to the Electoral Commission- a clear message to Ugandans that he has no intention of ever holding a free and fair election,”said Bobi Wine.
However Kyagulanyi ‘s criticism stems from his belief that a fair electoral process requires an independent and unbiased Electoral Commission.
He argued that the recent appointments undermine the principles of democracy and transparency, raising concerns about potential manipulation in future elections.
The opposition leader further emphasized the importance of an electoral body that represents the interests of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
He called for a more inclusive and diverse commission that can instill confidence in the electoral process and guarantee equal opportunities for all political actors.
Wine’s remarks have sparked a debate among political observers, with some supporting his stance on the need for an impartial Electoral Commission, while others defend Museveni’s prerogative to appoint individuals he deems fit for the role.
As the political landscape in Uganda continues to evolve, the discussion around the composition and integrity of the Electoral Commission remains a significant topic of interest, shaping the future of the democratic process in the country.
