Police arrested Ivan Sempijja and his deputy in the City Center as they marched towards the Ministry of Education and Sports. They intended to deliver a petition about critical issues pressing students and parents in the country especially at the University.
One of the issues they wish the Ministry addresses is the removal of functional fees for students in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reversal of 12% internet tax to facilitate ease of accessibility to learning is another issue.
The students also want Makerere University to halt the 15% cumulative tuition increment policy.
They are also demanding a comprehensive plan for full reopening of the University for physical learning to continue. This also includes a clear plan for mass vaccination of all students.
Kyagulanyi said that due to the government’s lack of solutions, it resorts to torture and arrests of its critics.
“Because the regime has no answers to even the basic demands, they always resort to arrests and torture of anyone who dares to speak on behalf of the oppressed citizens. These students should be released unconditionally because protesting peacefully is not an offence. Walking to a ministry to deliver a petition should not be criminalized. This just speaks to how much they FEAR THE PEOPLE.” Bobi Wine posted on his Facebook page.
The country expects the President to deliver an announcement later this week as the 42-day lockdown comes to an end.
However, according to hints from the Minister of Education and Sports, it seems like academic institutions will remain closed a little bit longer.
