Apparently, according to the statement, this group used these accounts for inauthentic activities.
It is on this point that Bobi Wine also involved himself. He further agreed with the move to shut down the Twitter accounts.
“On the eve of elections, Facebook detected and removed several such accounts. Prompting Museveni to ban Facebook in Uganda to date. Very glad to see that Twitter has taken a similar step and we hope the dictator will now not ban Twitter as well.”
Bobi Wine also says Museveni hired a large group of people to run multiple social media accounts to promote his regime! Additionally, he accused the President of using the accounts to tarnish his opponents & brand them foreign agents while praising his corrupt, inept regime.
“Museveni’s regime has been built on lies and propaganda- any effort to expose and stop them is to be hailed. Like all despots, whatever schemes he uses to illegally impose himself on the people of Uganda will finally will certainly fail.”
Twitter shut down 3,465 pro-government propaganda accounts in Uganda, Tanzania, Venezuela, China, Russia and Mexico.
Facebook previously did the same to NRM officials
In similar news previously reported by NEWSLEXPOINT.com, American social media giant Facebook pulled its gun triggers on NRM bloggers and pro-NRM social media users. A number of NRM leaning social media users woke up to find Facebook had deleted their accounts without an explanation.
The affected include Duncan Abigaba the deputy head of Government Citizen Interaction Centre (GCIC Uganda). Others like Facebook bloggers Ashburg Kato, Ismail Olaxes, Full figure, etc also faced the same axe.
