The National Unity Platform has revealed that security personnel took nomination papers containing over 7 million signatures. The signatures were collected to nominate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine for the presidency of the Republic of Uganda.
Security officers raided the party offices in Kamwokya and took a number of items according to the officials. The remarks on the signatures came shortly after the incident took place on Wednesday.
The NUP Spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi said the state is doing all it can to stop Bobi Wine from contesting for presidency come 2021.
As a way forward, Ssenyonyi said he will go back to the field to recollect the signatures ahead of the nomination date.
‘’They have taken all our signatures but our lawyers have begun following up these issues because the police came and broke into our offices without a search warrant,’’ he said.
The items taken;
The police took red berets, t-shirts, and nomination papers containing 7 million signatures among other additional items according to Ssenyonyi. He said it is unfortunate for them to lose their nomination signatures.
They were going to present to the Electoral Commission on Friday. Ssenyonyi wonders if the police has taken over the roles of the EC. Senyonyi says it is the EC that is to receive those signatures, not the police.
He further said the state is wasting its time. By all means, no matter what the state does, Bobi Wine will appear on that ballot paper in 2021.
However, police spokesperson Fred Enanga said the raid on NUP offices is the first of their many raids to come. Enanga says they will target all locations illegally supplying uniforms that are designed for the armed forces.
This leaves one wondering if nomination papers with 7 million signatures are also worn by the army!
