There are 3.8 million registered voters within the country and polls opened at 08:00 GMT and will close at 18:00 GMT.
There are eight candidates including the four who have boycotted the elections which has appeared to give a soar in the chances of President Pierre Nkurunziza to win the the controversial third consecutive term in the elections since the main opposition leader Agathon Rwasa is among the four who have boycotted.
Few international observers are watching the polls. The African Union hasn’t sent its team to witness the polls with claims that the elections are not free and fair but the East African Community (EAC).
who are trying in resolving the political unrest in Burundi have sent a team to observe the polls through the invitation given to them by the Burundian electoral commission.
The streets in Bujumbura the country’s capital are calm and silent since morning even though they were sustained gunfire and explosions and two people were killed.
Counting will start as soon as polls close and to win in the first round a candidate must have 50% plus one vote. Otherwise the two candidates who receive the most votes go for a run-off.
