Butchers in Ishaka, Central and Nyakabirizi divisions in Bushenyi have indefinitely closed the slaughter of animals. Authorities attribute this to the constantly rising charges of slaughtering the animals.
Under their association, Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality Butchery Owners Association, the butchers have accused Municipal authorities of increasing slaughtering fees without their consent.
Butchers in Ishaka have accused municipal authorities of high taxes being levied on them saying they can’t afford these taxes in a crisis.
According to the association’s chairman, Byaruhanga Nathan, charges have been increased from UGX7,000 to UGX10,000 and UGX5,000 to UGX7,000 for slaughtering a cow and a goat respectively.
He further noted that municipal authorities have failed to respond to their concerns. However, they are focusing on collecting more taxes forgetting the challenges Ugandans are facing.
The butchers further threatened to slaughter their animals from neighboring town councils like Kizinda, Kyamuhunga and Rwentuuha. They told the authorities that they can only avoid this by lowering the taxes.
Joel Nkore, the Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality deputy Mayor said they passed the new charging policy in the last council. This is to match the current economic hardship they also face in running the Municipality affairs.
