Businesswoman Remanded To Luzira Prison Over Theft Of Shs270 Million

Businesswoman, Brenda Nakalanzi, the managing director of Goshen Hope Enterprises has been remanded to Luzira prison on charges of causing government a financial loss. She apparently cost the government a total of over Shs 1 billion.

On Friday afternoon, Nakalanzi faced Anti-Corruption Court chief magistrate Joan Aciro. But while here, she denied all the charges against her.

She is charged together with Byasali Kabi the protection officer in the Office of the Prime Minister in Lamwo district. According to the Inspectorate of Government, Byasali is currently on the run.

Court heard that between January 11, 2022 and May 5, 2022, Byasali and Nakalanzi with fraudulent intentions, allegedly signed a contract for the construction of community centers and fencing in Zone 1 in Lamwo district.

This happened well knowing that the forged contract will cause financial loss. Indeed it caused a loss of Shs 1,132,579,686 to the government of Uganda.

In addition to that, Nakalanzi on May 4 and May 5 while at Centenary bank Bwaise branch and Entebbe road respectively, fraudulently stole Shs 270 million.

This money happened to be the property of the government and she did not have any claim of right over it.

However, after pleading not guilty to the charges, they remanded Nakalanzi to Luzira prison.

Without sureties to help her apply for bail, she will be behind bars until May 10, 2022 as investigations continue.

The spokesperson of the Inspectorate of Government, Ali Munira, says that Goshen Hope Enterprises is a company that deals in several things. This time however, they contracted it to provide construction services. Authorities are also investigating the award of the contract.

Munira added that they arrested Nakalanzi on Thursday at Centenary bank. Apparently, she was withdrawing part of the money that has since landed her in jail.
