Two Former Arua Hospital Staff Arrested over Embezzling Shs 28m

The Inspector-General of Government on Thursday arrested two former staff members of Arua regional referral hospital over alleged embezzlement. According to the inspectorate, Peter Okello Odeke and Anthony Esiangu Okise are the suspected conspirators. They connived to embezzle shs 28m that had been advanced to Arua hospital under the Uganda Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment project (UPHIA).

At the time, Odeke served as the principal hospital administrator before they transferred him to Mbarara regional referral hospital. As for Okise, he served as the hospital accountant but they later transferred him to the directorate of public prosecutions.

Okise, 62, had since retired and returned to his ancestral home in Soroti, from where they arrested him. Police arrested Odeke, 54, from Mbarara city, at his current duty post.

They are to appear before the Anti-Corruption court today Friday in Kololo, Kampala. They charged them with embezzlement, abuse of office and false accounting contrary to the Anti-Corruption Act 2009.

Earlier on Wednesday, four top Apac district officials appeared before court on charges of causing the government a financial loss. The loss apparently totaled up to Shs 338m. They however granted them bail later on.
