Constitutional disorder followed the former president of Chad, Idriss Deby Itno’s death after his son, a four-star military general took over. He has been in charge of the country ever since his father’s death. He died just a day after his re-election while battling rebels on the frontline.
In his first speech delivered to the nation, Gen. Mahamat Idriss Debby promised an ‘’inclusive national dialogue’’ during the 18-month transition to elections.
Civil society groups and political parties held demonstrations calling for the return of constitutional order in the country.
The protests which had been banned were met with brutal force from security bodies. Police arrested hundreds of demonstrators and killed dozens during this time.
The same organization, in recent days, urged authorities in Chad to commence investigations into the matter.
‘’We urge authorities to launch impartial and independent investigations into the circumstances of these deaths. And bring to justice anyone responsible for unlawful killing,’’ Amnesty International’s West and Central Africa Deputy Director Marceau Sivieude said.
