Chameleone And Other Musicians In Copyright Crisis

A few days ago, rumors had it musicians are planning to sell some of their music in order to get money to see them through the COVID 19 crisis.

Among these is singer Jose Chameleone who was rumored to have sold his music catalog to UgaTunes for about Shs 9B.

Chameleone however came out to trash these rumors saying he hasn’t sold any of his music. A number of music promoters however came out to warn them on selling these records.

These promoters allege that they bought some of the records of these artists and therefore the copyright of these songs and albums belongs to them. This means that these artists can no longer sell these records to anyone again.

Among these were Kasiwukira and Dick Productions who were popular music promoters in the early 2000s.

Although Dick productions died, his sons still run the business. They came out to warn some musicians on selling these albums again. However, while appearing on Spark TV, Chameleone said that he only sold the publishing rights to Kasiwukira.

He added that he even only sold two albums to him, Mambo Bado and Shida za Dunia. He further adding that he has all the agreements.

While appearing on Simba radio, the late Dick Ssewankambo’s sons said that their father bought the copyright of the albums of some big artists. They mentioned artists such as Abdu Mulaasi, Mesach Ssemakula, Ronald Mayinja, Sophia Nantongo, Geoffrey Lutaaya, Bobi Wine and Raga Dee.

They also say that the agreements these artists signed were selling their copyright and not just publishing rights.

When they asked whether they conned these musicians of huge sums of money, they said that the artists signed the agreements out of ignorance.
