In a shocking development that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has issued orders for the preparation of VIP cells at Kira Police Station.
The move comes as several Members of Parliament (MPs) and officials from Parliament and the Finance ministry face imminent arrest on charges related to corruption.
Under the directive of CID director Tom Magambo, a meeting was held in Kibuli over the weekend, where he conveyed the instructions given by President Museveni himself. The suspects, whose identities remain undisclosed, are to be summoned for questioning and have their statements recorded.
Kira police station to clean up cells for VIP detainees
According to inside sources, the CID director specifically requested Kira Police Station to ensure their cells are ready to accommodate VIP detainees in the coming week.
The urgency of the situation indicates the gravity of the allegations and the determination to bring those involved to justice.
While the exact number of individuals involved remains unclear, it has been confirmed that at least two MPs and three other individuals have already provided statements to the CID on Friday.
These individuals are accused of irregularly withdrawing funds from public coffers, further tarnishing the reputation of Parliament.
The corruption scandal surrounding Parliament has reached unprecedented levels, with social media activists exposing the misuse of billions of shillings in corporate social responsibility and per diem payments.
The revelations intensified when it was discovered that four backbench Parliamentary Commissioners had shared Shs1.7 billion among themselves through a controversial service award scheme they had devised.
One of the MPs caught in the scandal is Mathias Mpuuga, the then Leader of the Opposition, who received Shs500 million as a one-off personal gratuity. The other three MPs involved are Solomon Silwany, Esther Afoyochan, and Prossy Mbabazi, who each pocketed Shs400 million.
The illicit funds have caused a strain in Mpuuga’s relationship with his parent party, the National Unity Platform.
Museveni orders CID to interrogate legislators
In response to these revelations, members of the ruling party have initiated a censure motion against the four implicated legislators. Led by Theodore Ssekikubo and Sarah Opendi, they aim to hold the MPs accountable for their involvement in the corruption scandal.
The gathering of member signatures for the motion is set to conclude today, reflecting the urgency and determination to address the issue.
President Museveni, during his recent State of the Nation Address, made it clear that he possesses incriminating evidence against corrupt individuals.
His remarks prompted a strong reaction from legislators, who demanded that he take decisive action against them.
The President expressed his resolve to combat corruption, vowing to hold the dishonest accountable while also acknowledging the possibility of innocent individuals being caught in the crossfire.
As the investigations proceed and the legal actions unfold, the nation awaits further developments in this high-profile corruption scandal.
The outcome of these events will undoubtedly shape the future of governance and accountability in Uganda, as well as test the strength of the nation’s commitment to combating corruption at all levels.
