Supporters of Col Dr. Kizza Besigye, who were initially relieved by the recent Supreme Court ruling on court-martialing civilians, faced disappointment on Saturday morning. This was due to a surprising announcement from a senior army officer.
Colonel Chris Magezi declared that Dr. Kizza Besigye would not be released despite the Supreme Court ruling.
As the “Military Assistant in charge of Public Relations” in the Office of the Chief of Defence Forces, Magezi stated that the military court would proceed with the trial of the former presidential candidate, with the final decision resting with President Yoweri Museveni.
Magezi’s statement sparked an online uproar, with many questioning the UPDF’s compliance with the Supreme Court’s orders.
Despite this, the UPDF spokesperson has not issued an official response, leading to uncertainty regarding the implementation of the court ruling.
Besigye’s legal team insists that following the Supreme Court ruling, he should be released from Luzira Prison and not subjected to further military trials.
However, with the UPDF standing firm, it remains unclear whether authorities will honor the court decision or if additional legal action will be necessary to secure Besigye’s release.
