Crackdown On Counterfeit Ticket Sales Leads To 15 Detentions At Uganda vs. South Africa Showdown

During the Uganda vs. South Africa Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at Namboole Stadium on November 15, 2024, a total of 15 individuals were arrested for various criminal activities, including the sale of counterfeit tickets.

Among the arrested, 12 suspects are scheduled to appear in court, while three university students were cautioned and subsequently released.

In a joint weekly security briefing held at Naguru Police headquarters, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the arrests.

This action was prompted by intelligence reports concerning ticket fraud, leading to the apprehension of the individuals involved. While three students were cautioned due to their academic status, the remaining 12 are expected to face legal consequences in court.

Upholding justice and ensuring safety

The suspects are slated to appear at Kira Magistrate’s Court on Monday, November 18, 2024, where they will be charged with the offense of dealing in counterfeit tickets.

Meanwhile, investigations are underway to shed light on the circumstances surrounding an assault incident that occurred during the event.

Additionally, an individual found intoxicated and lying in the road also drew attention, highlighting the importance of maintaining order and safety at such gatherings.

Despite the security incidents, the match ended with a 2-0 victory for South Africa, with James Thapelo Morena and Patrick Maswanganyi scoring the decisive goals.

While Uganda faced defeat, both teams had already secured qualification for the upcoming tournament. Looking ahead, Uganda’s Cranes are gearing up for their final qualification match against Congo, aiming to finish the campaign on a positive note.

With 10 points from five games, the team remains optimistic about their prospects moving forward.
