The singer said that ever since the COVID 19 pandemic broke out, teenage pregnancy has really spiraled out of control.
“Since the outbreak of coronavirus, teenage pregnancy has really highly increased. I urge parents to be keen and watch out for the girl child. Do not take their silence for innocence. Speak to them as often as you can,” Desire Luzinda said.
The Ekitone singer added that in case of pregnancy, the girl child should be comforted instead of being shunned. She added that with teenage pregnancy, most girls’ futures are shattered.
This is because most drop out of school amongst other factors which all render them to poverty, violence and social exclusion. She further added that few people focus on the educational consequences faced by school girls’ pregnancy.
The singer who recently unveiled her Desire Luzinda Foundation International said that they are advocating for teen parents to remain in schools.
The mother of one added that she’s looking at minimizing teenage pregnancy and parenthood. Short of this, it will compromise young people’s skills for life and work according to the singer.
Uganda has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in Sub-Saharan Africa. This escalated in the COVID 19 pandemic. Schools remained closed leaving girls prone to their attackers.
Meanwhile, the singer also decided to focus on humanitarian work foregoing her music career.
