However, due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, Khaled will host the virtual ceremony from the comfort of his home in the US.
“MTV has always been a great partner so I jumped at the opportunity to host this year’s Mamas. I can’t wait to celebrate the incredible music that comes out of Africa, which has inspired me throughout my career,” DJ Khaled said.
Joining DJ Khaled will be other African co-hosts that will be announced at a later stage for the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony will air on MTV in 180 countries.
He has numerous chart-topping hits featuring Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake, Chris Brown, Ludacris, T.I. He also has French Montana, Future, Big Sean, Rick Ross, John Legend, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne, among others in his list.
Hip-hop stars Wyclef Jean and Eve and actors Anthony Anderson and Marlon Wayans are among past hosts of the event. This event is now in its 14th year.
What the awards represents;
The MTV Africa Music Awards recognizes the talent of musicians, achievers and personalities from across Africa. Many personalities have some these awards before. Among them is 2Face Idibia, AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Clarence Peters, Cabo Snoop, Davido, D’Banj, Diamond Platnumz, and Flavour among others.
The nominations in the Best International Act will see Dj khalid competing with The Weeknd, Da Baby, Megan Thee Stallion, Drake and Beyoncé.
The MAMA Kampala 2021 event will celebrate African talent across 20 award categories. They include Best Male, Best Female, Best Song, and Best Collaboration among others.
The awards will also recognize the contribution of artists from Portuguese and French-speaking Africa in the Best Lusophone and Best Francophone categories.
