Doctors In South Africa Confirm New Coronavirus Variant

Scientists in South Africa have confirmed a new  coronavirus variant, from the lineage of the Sars-CoV-2 virus. South Africa’s Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize said the new coronavirus variant known as 501.V2 was fueling the second wave of the virus in the country. Sars-CoV-2, like all other viruses, definitely mutates with time therefore this did not come as a surprise.

Between March and September 2020, the virus has mutated several times across the entire globe depending on the conditions of the area. However much a mutated virus sounds scary, the mutation is very common in viruses. On many occasions, the tweak can be meaningless but on other occasions, the upgrade can make the virus more deadly in terms of spreading.

On the contrary, though, South African scientists say the virus has accumulated several mutations that they have never seen before.
Dr. Mkhize said clinicians provided evidence of a shift in the clinical epidemiological picture. They noted in particular, that a larger proportion of younger patients have no co-morbidities presenting with critical illnesses.

‘’We have collected the evidence, therefore, we strongly suggests that the second wave we are experiencing is driven by this new variant.’’ Mkhize said during a virtual briefing on Friday.
The group of mutated viruses of Sars-CoV-2 was discovered in Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and KwaZulu Natal.
