Does Opposition Stand A Chance In Speakership Race?

Today, the August House will be voting for their new Speaker after the demise of Hon Jacob Oulanyah. This speakership race will see Anita Among as the NRM flag bearer going head to head with Opposition flag bearer, Asuman Basalirwa.

The question on everyone’s lips is whether the opposition stands a chance in this speakership race.

It may be a weird question to ask but we have not heard any opposition member win elections for the speakership position before.

Out of 529 members of Parliament, NRM has 336 while opposition has 109 members. If the opposition is going to win this election, it means some NRM members will have to cross over to vote for Hon. Asuman Basalirwa.

Is it possible? In the last election, Semujju Nganda didn’t even get half of the votes from his fellow opposition legislators because he only got 15 votes from the August House.

Veteran Journalist, Joseph Sabiti has already predicted a win for Hon. Anita Among. He said she will even scoop votes from the opposition members.

“By the end of today, Rt. Hon. Anita Among will be the Speaker of Parliament and Hon. Thomas Tayebwa will be the Deputy Speaker of Parliament. These two people will even pull votes from the opposition because of their simplicity and character,” Sabiiti said.

Meanwhile, the legislators are already making their way to Kololo to vote for their new speaker as required by the Constitution before the burial of the fallen speaker.
