According to Hilderman, the world has grown technologically. And yet the available copyright law in Uganda doesn’t address it. Artists now have to majorly earn digitally but the existing law has a number of loopholes.
People and companies especially telecom companies have been exploiting this loophole. He cited an example of the caller tunes where fans think they are helping their artists when they subscribe to them as ring tones. Yet in reality, artists earn just about 7% of the entire deal.
“Most artists nowadays earn digitally since the globe has evolved technologically. However, the existing law doesn’t address this loophole. And many companies have been exploiting it to deprive artists of a fair financial distribution. For instance, people always subscribe to the caller tunes thinking they are supporting their artists yet these entertainers only earn about 7%. So therefore we want to address it such that everyone involved, artists, government and telecom companies earn fairly,” said Hilderman.
He however refused to divulge more details of this proposition as he’s afraid of the clauses being stolen.
Therefore the aim is to help artists earn from their work and not appear as though they are being helped.
He won’t only stop there but will also tackle the implementation segment. This is because the existing law hasn’t been doing what it is supposed to do.
The Mazongoto singer is therefore going to commence consultations. He will also find out how those having the copyright law use it to their advantage.
